TMS Therapy

IRVINE PSYCHIATRY AND TMS - DR. ROULA CREIGHTON

What Is TMS Therapy?

TMS, or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate the brain. TMS is FDA-approved for the treatment of depression, OCD and chronic pain. It is also being studied as a potential treatment for other conditions such as anxiety, PTSD and substance use disorders. TMS is thought to work by modulating the activity of neurons in the brain. During a TMS session, a magnet is placed against the head and short pulses of magnetic energy are delivered to the brain. These pulses induce electrical currents that can stimulate or inhibit neuronal activity. TMS is safe and well-tolerated, with few side effects. The most common side effect is headaches, which typically resolve on their own within a few days. TMS is an exciting treatment option that offers hope to those struggling with mental illness.

FDA Approved

Is TMS FDA Approved or Cleared?

Yes! TMS was first approved in 2008 as a treatment for Major Depressive Disorder and is commonly known as rTMS. In 2018, the MagVenture therapy system was approved for a revolutionary treatment protocol known as Theta Burst Stimulation (iTBS). In 2017 and 2020, two different TMS systems received U.S. FDA approval for adjunctive treatment of adults struggling with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. This groundbreaking non-drug and noninvasive treatment is an exciting step in medical treatments for mental health treatment options.  And just recently in 2024, the FDA cleared the MagVenture TMS system for treatment of chronic neuropathic pain.
